PERFORMANCE TRIALS SERIES TO NAME NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION HOUNDS

The late Ben Hardaway gave a gift to all foxhunters when he modeled his foxhound performance trials after those held for field trial foxhounds. In 1996, Hardaway and co-master Mason Lampton premiered performance trials for mounted foxhunters and the concept has brought new depth to the sport. Performance trials help validate breeding practices for hunting traits.

NO REST FOR HUNT STAFF DURING THE SUMMER

After the final hunt of the season, there is not much time to take a breath. For hunt staff, summer vacation is not in the cards. At hunts like Hillsboro Hounds and Midland Fox Hounds, summer is the time for getting hounds and horses fit in preparation for the next season.

ADULT SUMMER CAMP: KEEPING A GOOD THING GROWING

If you ask Virginia “Ginny” Perrin what she thinks of summer camps, she’ll tell you they aren’t just for kids. For her, as MFH at Deep Run Hunt, sometimes camp is more fun when it’s adults only.

THOUGHTS OF A FOXHUNTER

Often, I can relate good reading to good fox hunting. The favorite book of my adulthood has been A Sand County Almanac, written by Aldo Leopold and published in 1949. This author is one of the naturalists who understood the interactions of nature and wrote elegantly. The Almanac is a series of short stories and in one short story, Leopold writes about “Wildlife in American Culture.”

The dedication of the new Camargo Hunt kennels was held June 5 at their home in Owen County, Kentucky. After years of planning and preparation, the kennels, the barn and the huntsman’s home are complete according to the design. Carmargo Hunt’s huntsman Andy Bozdan designed the new facility and described it as the fulfillment of a dream.
